How I find copy in everything

I have to admit, I am not the usual flowery dramatic novelist. I write mostly true to life and practical how to. I write in article or short story form. I have a website that is devoted to sharing the every day knowledge I have developed about everything from travel to employment and relationships. I more times than not, in the beginning and even now have gotten stuck on what to write about. I would have to take off somewhere and clear my head so that I could conjure up a topic. What I hadn't…See More

Introduction and help with interviewing tips

Hello all, my name is Michael Block, and I write for Examiner.com as the Orlando Auto Examiner. I joined a while ago, but I do the Examiner thing in addition to my 50-hour-a-week day job, so I haven't had the time to post an introduction. Anyway, I have a very important interview coming up with a very prominent automotive company in the Orlando area, and I want to be nothing less than 100% prepared for it. Do you all have any interviewing tips you can offer me? I know the obvious things like…See More

Return of the long lost muse!

My muse came to visit today! It's been so long I hardly recognized her. She brought with her an idea I'd had years ago and today I started sketching out the first scenes. It's something kind of along the lines of "Fried Green Tomatoes", "Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood", "How to Make an America Quilt"... that arena. I love feeling inspired!

critique group, anyone?

I'm interested in forming a critique/support group in Orlando to meet on a weekly basis either at Stardust on Winter Park Road or Barnes and Noble at Colonial & Bumby. I write short fiction and very short (flash) fiction so would be most interested in connecting with people who do the same, but if you are writing a book, maybe we could accommodate that, too.

Anyone interested? Please contact me privately or leave a message here with your availability, interests, and contact info.

Notes from the front lines.

Ah yes. It's time to sit down and deal with that next chapter. You are in the throes of serious writer's block and can't think of how to advance your story. How does one move the novel forward and into the hands of your agent and the buying-reading public?

A technique that has worked for me is this. You know how a writer is not supposed to 'tell' the story, but to let it reveal itself in action and in dialogue? That's the point where I get hung up most often. I'm bogged down in the… Continue
